"Scratching a Niche - More planners meet success in specialized markets" By Ben Chapman OCTOBER 01, 2003 -- As the industry-wide recovery slowly gains momentum, more meeting planners are finding lucrative opportunities in niche markets that bask in pre-recession health. Certain markets have been quicker to recover than others, say planners and job-placement experts. "Pharmaceutical and medical events still have real budgets. The jobs are demanding but they pay well," explains Jo-Ann McKeon, founder of McKeon Associates in Scottsdale, AZ, and Stirling, NJ. McKeon also notes that a greater need for meeting planners exists in urban markets than suburban ones, and she expects these trends to continue, at least in the short term. "I already have some pharmaceutical events booked for next year, so I think those will be strong again in 2004." Blaire Allison, who founded Metro Event Planners in New York City about 18 months ago, says her business endured a rocky start as a general event management firm, but is now thriving since it found a niche. "Now that we are more focused on themed events, particularly for women—like bachelorette parties—things are picking up, and we're developing a stronger brand," says the entrepreneur. And planners in other markets are sensing a recovery as well. At presstime, Sharon Fisher, president of Play With a Purpose in Orlando, FL, was seeking a sales associate to help keep up with growing demand for her company's services. "The market seems to be regrouping after two down years," she observes. "We're starting to hear the phones ringing, starting to sense a pickup. It's been a roller-coaster ride, but now it feels like it's winding down." Meanwhile, there is plenty of talent out there waiting to be hired, says Ellen Sandler, a planner placement specialist with ESP Meeting Minders in San Mateo, CA. "Some out-of-work planners have taken their skills and used them in temporary roles, before they can get back to what they really want," she says, "which is planning." |
