OCTOBER 01, 2003 – “Every woman comes to the dance for her own personal reasons,” said Sahara. “some may appreciate the beauty, some may appreciate the sensuous of it, some may love the physical workout they get.”

I took a class sponsored by Metro Event Planners, where fifty women of all ages, shapes, and races gathered in a dance studio to learn basic belly dancing moves. After a brief explanation of the history of the art, we were up on our bare feet, isolating our upper bodies in a series of twists and swirls. Seductive hand and arm movements were added and the chorus of giggles that was once echoing throughout the room was replaced by the sultry beat of Istanbul was we watched ourselves in the mirror.

Sahira led us through a sequence of hip movements and shimmies. As she roamed the class, making eye contact brought a blush to your cheeks as you felt an intimate connection with the person returning your stare. At that moment, all the hype of having a perfect body was joyously erased as tummies slithered, breasts were shaking, and derrieres of all shapes and sizes rocked in seductive circles. At the end of the class, we all stood in a circle and shared tips for performing our own belly dances. A chorus of “love your body” and “trust your body” and “it’s all about the feminine attitude” rang out.
